Reflections on Psalm 2:10-12

Now then, you kings, be wise; be admonished, you judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear; tremble with trepidation! Kiss the son, lest He become angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath kindles in a flash. Blessed are all who seek refuge in Him.
Psalm 2:10-12, Modern English Version (MEV)

Okay, so here we find ample evidence that most of the world's leaders, past and present, aren't all that intelligent. Thumbing their noses at God is not only not intelligent, but also just plain stupid. We are after all, talking about God, the Creator of the universe. Getting on His bad side shows an amazing lack of wisdom. One can almost excuse those who claim they do not believe in God, Jesus, putting their foolishness off as ignorance. The same cannot be done, however, for those who claim they are believers, then proceed to ignore the God in Whom they claim they believe. That's more than simple foolishness, it's pure, unadulterated stupidity.

Does that sound harsh? Does that sound less than loving? Does that sound intolerant? Well, perhaps we should read the words of the psalmist again, "Now then, you kings, be wise; be admonished, you judges of the earth. Serve the Lord with fear; tremble with trepidation! Kiss the son, lest He become angry, and you perish in the way, for His wrath kindles in a flash. Blessed are all who seek refuge in Him." Now, if you want to go ahead and complain about how harsh, how unloving, and how intolerant God is, be my guest, but I can virtually guarantee that it isn't going to get you very far.

The simple truth is, God puts people in positions of leadership, whether secular or spiritual, and He just as easily can yank them right back out of those leadership positions. Every leader should thank God for putting them in the position they're in and be careful to do all that God asks of them. Those that do so will be blessed, those who do not will be, well, let's just say the alternative will not be pleasant. The smart thing, the intelligent thing, the wise thing to do is serve the Lord with fear and trembling.
