Seven sons and three daughters were born to him.
Job 1:2, Modern English Version (MEV)
After a few short words telling us what a perfect person
Job was, the writer is about to regale us with how wealthy he was. He beings by
telling us that he was rich with children. Of course, having many sons was a
blessing, daughters not so much. (Don’t judge me. That’s the way things were.)
The writer emphasized this point by telling us Job had seven sons, seven being
a lucky, godly, a blessed number. On the other hand, Job had three daughters, a
human, earthly, even unblessed number. What we need to note is that the writer
is mentioning these things in the manner he does to build the structure of the
story. These points are important if we are to understand what follows
correctly.
