I lay down and slept; I awoke, for the Lord
sustained me. I will not be afraid of multitudes of people who have set
themselves against me all around.
Psalm 3:5-6, Modern English Version (MEV)
What a joy and blessing it is to be able to lay down at night and sleep the sleep of those who know the Lord will take care of them. Unfortunately, this sleep of blessed assurance seems to be elusive to a great number of God's disciples. Far too many of us insist on taking our worries, our fears, our anger, our hurts, and our frustrations, to bed with us, which only steals from us the restful sleep we need.
For our own peace and well-being, it is imperative that we learn to give our cares and concerns over to our loving God Who can deal with them much more efficiently than we ever could. We must learn to rest in Him and the blessed assurance that He is firmly in control. We may not fully understand what He is about, but we must have faith and trust Him.
The life of a disciple of Christ can often be compared to being in the eye of a hurricane, where all appears calm and peaceful even while raging winds of rage and destruction blow all around. God doesn't always take the storms away, but He can create within us that peaceful port in the storm if we'd only allow Him to do His work in us.
