Romans 1:21

Because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him or give thanks to Him as God, but became futile in their imaginations, and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Romans 1:21, Modern English Version (MEV)

Even more damning is the realization that even though they could clearly see the evidence of God in the world around them, they refused to acknowledge and glorify Him. Instead, they chose to invent all sorts of myths and theories in a futile effort to explain everything and, in the process, slipped further and further into darkness. We can, unfortunately, see this very process playing out before our eyes at an ever increasing rate.

To be clear, there is nothing wrong with being curious about the nature of things, or even about the origin of things. Science itself is largely based on the work of those who had strong beliefs in God and were very interested in learning more about his creation. In fact, many of the early efforts in the realm of scientific exploration were done for the specific purpose of proving the existence of God or of a higher or supreme ultimate power.

The issues come, not so much in using science, philosophy, etc., to deny God, but choosing to put God’s creation above God and, quite literally, to worship created things as God. Now, we laugh at primitive attempts at various forms of animal worship, the worship of inanimate objects, even the worship of celestial bodies, but do we really have room to laugh? After all, look at the great cathedrals we’ve built so we can gather together to worship our favorite sports teams and personalities. Don’t laugh. Worshipping them is exactly what we are doing. And the list doesn’t end there.

The lesson we have yet to learn is that the worshipping of things, rather than God, is quite easy to fall in to and, more often than not, we don’t even realize it’s happening.
