The
Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, the glory as the
only Son of the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14, Modern English Version (MEV)
Is it truly possible for us, creatures with limited minds, limited understanding and limited vision, to grasp what the words, “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,” really mean? It’s readily apparent that most of us can’t since we continue to go about our lives as if such a thing never happened. Oh, we profess that it’s true, and we claim we understand, but our lives witness against us.
Is it truly possible for us to comprehend that the Almighty Creator of heaven and earth, came into His creation, not in the form of a human, but as a human, with all that comes with it? Is it truly possible for us to comprehend how God, the Almighty Creator of heaven and earth, entered His creation as a tiny, helpless baby, born in crowded, smelly, noisy circumstances? Is it truly possible for us to comprehend that the Almighty Creator of heaven and earth, exited His creation after suffering terrible torture and one of the most horrible forms of death devised by man?
Yes, it is possible for us to grasp and comprehend it, at least in part. John did, as did the other disciples, as have many believers down through the ages. So why doesn’t that comprehension come to all of us? In most cases it’s because we don’t want to comprehend it. If we truly comprehended it, we’d be consumed by it and we want to avoid that if at all possible. That sounds harsh, but it’s true nonetheless, particularly in this country. We don’t really want to stand out. We’d rather blend in along with everyone else. We know enough about God and His Word to know that if we allowed Him to truly take over our lives, our anonymity would get tossed out the window. For that reason, we purposely allow ourselves to comprehend only so much, then we shut down our minds and hearts before this God thing becomes too dangerous.
